Committing to Leadership: William John Wilson’s path to impact
“I wanted somewhere I could be part of decision-making at a broader national level, where my decisions could help effect real change and where I could contribute to outcomes that have a lasting national impact,” William stated, explaining why he changed his career direction after his national service in the oil and gas sector.
As a Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program alumnus, former Vice President of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Peer Mentorship Program, and Ambassador for Scholars with Disabilities at MCFSP-KNUST, William had the values, principles, and leadership skills to effect meaningful change. After graduating and completing his national service, what he needed was the perfect opportunity into the Public service.
Connected to Emerging Public Leaders by a colleague at the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Secretariat, William applied and received an invitation to join the sixth cohort. After completing his one-year fellowship, he remained engaged for about eight months before being appointed to the Civil Service.
Despite receiving other immediate job offers with more favorable terms, William remained steadfast, driven by his passion for public service. He was determined to bring his skills, ideas, and innovations to the service of the nation. Three months ago, he began his career in the Civil Service as a Budget Analyst at the Ministry of Finance.
